The Witch was sung by British mezzo – soprano Carole Wilson whose demeanour, enhanced by a bald head and cat like step, was truly terrifying even for adults.
Carole Wilson made a fabulous pantomime – style witch, convincingly evil enough to be booed at the curtain call for all the right (non-vocal) reasons! Her Witch’s Aria was both dramatic and beautifully sung.
As the Witch Carole Wilson uses her mezzo – soprano to great effect as she ensures that all of her words come out clearly, but “switches” to producing a more sumptuous sound on occasions

C’est la Sorcière de Carole Wilson qui tire à elle la couverture et les acclamations du publique… l’actrice est impayable d’humour.
Carole Wilson trouve en la sorcière Grignotte une personnage à sa démesure: d’abord vieille dame en rose, sosie de Barbara Cartland, elle se transforme bientôt en Mae West à boa et fume- cigarette et son chant ponctué de graves à la Louis Armstrong ou de rires sataniques est assez irrésistible.
En Sorcière Carole Wilson … Il faut la voir jouer les vamps hollywoodiennes sur le retour et avec quelle délectation et quel sens de l’humour.

Elle laisse tomber le manteau et le chapeau et effectue un nouveau croisement physique, à la fois vieille chanteuse de cabaret, longue robe de satin et boa rose, et Baby Jane de Bette Davis cheveaux platine et maquillage surchargé. Sa voix croasse et ricane,avant de laisser libre cours à sa fureur et sa folie dans de sublimes aigus, déployés avec un facilité déconcertante maintenus même une porte-cigarette à la bouche.

The scene where Aksinya is raped is played out in a sea of mud. It is quite revolting and rightly so. It also features one of the finest pieces of operatic singing and acting in extreme conditions I have ever seen and Carole Wilson, the Aksinya really deserves some kind of medal.

Particulièrement á son aise .. la mezzo-soprano Carole Wilson qui interprète une lumineuse et démoniaque Mrs Lovett.
Dans le rôle de Mrs Lovett, Carole Wilson se taille un triomphe justifié. Quel punch, quelle présence étourdissante, quelle drôlerie irrésistible dans la maîtrise vocale de cette plantureuse voix de mezzo.
Particulièrement en cue, Carole Wilson, qu’on avait surtout vu jusqu’ici dans les seconds rôles, tient la vedette du spectacle en campant avec une verve exceptionnelle et une crédibilité parfaite une Mrs Lovett truculente et sans scrupules. Elle adapte facilement sa voix à l’écriture particulière de la comédie musicale (beaucoup de texte et peu de lyrisme) déploie ses talents de comédienne insoupçonnées et emporte haut la main les faveurs du public; le rôle lui colle à la peau.
Mention spéciale à la mezzo-soprano anglaise Carole Wilson. Elle fait des merveilles dans le rôle de Mrs Lovett: drôle, pétillante, délicieusement amorale

Cette figure de la bonne commerçante affranchie sans scrupule et aussi une midinette, amoureuse jusqu’à l’os de son Todd, naïve autant qu’elle est futée et coriace. Elle porte le show par ses attitudes et sa gouaille toute britannique.
Carole Wilson explose de verve en Mrs Lovett, la tenancière amoureuse et sans scrupules. Truculente mezzo au timbre ardent, comédienne vaudevillesque, elle fait son personnage une madame-tout-le-monde inquiétant d’empathie
L’extraordinaire prestation de la mezzo-soprano Carole Wilson nous campe une Mrs Lovett des plus drôlatique et tout aussi diabolique.
De uitblinker van de avond is echter Carole Wilson als Mrs Lovett. Zij speelt en zingt met zoveel finesse en kracht dat het een genot is om haar bezig te zien. Elke scène is raak, zowel qua emotie als verstaanbaarheid.
